Bursting out of New York City claiming to be born of cartoons like ‘Josie And The Pussycats’ and Monkees re-runs, as well as admitting an unhealthy addiction to the album ‘Can’t Stand The Rezillos’ in their formative years, The Kowalskis are keeping the emphasis strictly on fun!
Originally called Killer Kowalski before being forced to change their name after the wrestler of the same title objected, The Kowalskis are fronted by vocalist / guitarist Kitty Kowalski who was also the former co-owner, along with Jesse Malin, of the legendary NYC venue / club Coney Island High. Kitty is backed by Mike Hunt on lead guitar/ backing vocals, Fannie Kowalski on bass, Greggie Kowalski on drums and Guru Kowalski who looks after the equipment, the sound and most importantly, the band!
After an extensive tour of the USA and Canada with Italy’s Manges in the summer 2000, their lust for performing live finally brought them over to Europe in September of the same year, which also included some great shows across the UK.
Their debut album, released in 1999, All Hopped Up On Goofballs is everything Blondie aspired to before settling on a career in pop music. This is just the type of stripped back, sleazy New York sound with gorgeously gritty punk rock popping, blitzkrieg bopping harmonies that would make the Queen of Noise Joan Jett scream "I Love Rock’n’Roll!" Yes, if you’re looking for ‘100% Fun’ with every mixed up emotion in between, from the heart melting ‘Kiss Me One More Time’ to the torturous ‘Meanest Guy’, injected with a cover of Devo’s ‘Uncontrollable Urge’, look no further than these fourteen three-minute ‘Killer’ Kowalskis tunes all produced by the Dictators’ Andy Shernoff. And with a final reassuring sleeve note to inform you that a dollar from the sale of every album will go towards a beer, this CD is most definitely the cure you’ve been looking for for that ‘Sunny Sunday Hangover’
